T Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI), the refinery and petrochemicals arm of state-owned energy giant Pertamina, has started production on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) derived from used cooking oil at its Cilacap refinery.
The plant-based jet fuel, also called bioavtur, is currently undergoing internal testing for test flights in mid-August.
As part of preparations for the bioavtur test flight, Pertamina’s technology innovation team recently finalized development on a new catalyst called the “Red and White catalyst”, which accelerates chemical reactions to convert used cooking oil into jet fuel.
“This catalyst is a crucial innovation in Pertamina's SAF production, which utilizes used cooking oil as raw material,” KPI operations director Didik Bahagia said on Wednesday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
Indonesia, the world’s largest producer of crude palm oil (CPO), has been piloting projects on converting CPO into bioavtur since 2021, as well as exploring the bioavtur potentials of used cooking oil, of which it is the third-largest exporter globally.
“Pertamina's SAF production is a concrete manifestation of KPI's support for the [national] energy transition. It also aligns with Pertamina's dual growth strategy, particularly in developing [the company’s] low-carbon business and producing bio-based products,” Didik added.
