T

he Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry is aiming for a 1 percent vegetable oil blend in aviation turbine fuel (avtur) in 2027 as part of a larger effort to reduce the country’s reliance on oil imports and cut national carbon emissions.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) views sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as a way to decarbonize the aviation industry, according to a statement it made in December last year. It has called on governments in many parts of the world to incentivize the scaling-up of SAF production.

“Bio-avtur is on the road map, we will detail the road map in [a ministerial regulation]. According to the road map, [we will have a] 1 percent [vegetable oil blend in avtur] in 2027,” said the ministry’s renewables director general, Eniya Listiani Dewi, in Jakarta on Monday, as reported by Bisnis.

She added that the vegetable oil blend would include palm oil or coconut oil.

As the world’s largest producer of crude palm oil (CPO), Indonesia has been identified as a potential SAF feedstock supplier and has run pilot projects on the use of biofuel for aviation since 2021.

The government is also eyeing the use of used cooking oil, of which the country is also the third-largest exporter in the world, for SAF.

Eniya said that the ministry would continue discussions on how to increase the domestic use of biofuel, especially in the aviation industry, given that Indonesia was strategically positioned in the Indo-Pacific region.
