oordinating Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono has pledged to double household access to piped clean water within the next three years.
“Today, we have about 14 million house connections, supplying water to roughly 56 million people. That is just about 20 percent of our population,” said Agus, also known as AHY, on Tuesday during a Water Town Hall event in Jakarta.
“By 2029, we are targeting 24 million connections, or around 40 percent urban coverage, reaching up to 93 million people.”
The target, set under the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2025-2029, would require the rollout of an additional 10 million household connections within three years, a pace far faster than previous expansions.
Looking further ahead, the government aims to achieve universal piped water access by 2045, in line with the National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN), with 56 million connections serving an estimated 211 million people.
The urgency of expanding direct access to piped networks, he said, is also due to the stark price disparity faced by households without piped connections, with jerrycan water costing 25 times more than piped supply and packaged bottled water up to 1,000 times higher.
To accelerate network expansion, the government is seeking to mobilize private investment and strengthen public-private partnerships, particularly in urban areas where demand is highest.
