With the increasing cost of land and contractors in the country, many Indonesians are seeking out more affordable ways to design and build a home to their liking. For some, these considerations lead to “prefab houses” which are homes made from prefabricated components.
The prefabricated house components may be made out of wood, concrete or metal or composite panels made out of aluminum. The prices vary, depending on the material and the location. For example, a 40 square meter prefab house made out of light-weight brick could cost Rp 90 million (US$6,315). While a 37 sq. m prefab house made out of wood could cost up to Rp 400 million.
The idea behind prefabricated buildings is to provide the owner with pre-built building materials that they can assemble at will. Pre-built building materials are produced by dedicated factories. What sets a prefabricated house apart from other conventional buildings is its shorter building duration. Usually, homeowners will hire contractors to assemble it.
Albert Arron Pramono, founder of construction company Accossa, which builds prefab houses, says that it is based on a concept akin to a puzzle because of how the building materials interconnect.
“[This is why] it could be a solution in earthquake-prone areas,” Albert said.
