em>In its current exhibition, Jakarta's Rachel Gallery seeks to introduce the increasingly rare art of drawings and etchings to a new generation of Indonesian artists and art enthusiasts.

The rooster caught the viewer's attention, not least its crest, beak and wattles, portrayed with a sure, strong hand. The animal's claws, leg spurs and vividly drawn tail feathers added to this impression. Titled The World is Never Silint by its creator, artist Bestrizal Besta, a closer look at the sturdy horse chest and equine forelegs reflected the creature's hybrid nature and perhaps the mutability and constant changes of life.

Back to basics

The World is Never Silint is one of the works featured in Basic: A Group Exhibition. The event showcases drawings and watercolors by contemporary artists Bestrizal Besta, Agus Suwage, Ivan Sagita and Anusapati.

"In this current era, almost everyone born into the generation surrounded by digital gadgets lacks adequate manual writing skills -- including those who choose to produce artistic work using digital media. This […] increasingly distances [them] from the manual, traditional and hand-made," said Rachel Gallery director Pamuji "Pam" Slamet in Basic's press release.

"Rachel Gallery has collaborated with Agus Suwage, Anusapati, Bestrizal Besta and Ivan Sagita to show what has been lost due to technological development and adoption," the press release notes.
