Gina S. Noer’s film about sexual violence Like & Share wins the Grand Prix at the celebrated Osaka Asian Film Festival.
Indonesia’s 2022 teenage sexual violence film Like & Share by filmmaker Gina S. Noer was granted the best picture award or the Grand Prix at the celebrated Osaka Asian Film Festival on March 19.
“I am very thankful for the jury and audience’s appreciation for Like & Share at the Osaka Asian Film Festival,” relayed Gina to The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
“This movie talks about how we face trauma and sexual violence, which are never easy to deal with. So I hope by winning this [award], the message can spread wider to the right audience,” she added.
The festival’s jury noted in a statement that the film, with its “strong message and brilliant direction”, is one that must be seen “now more than ever.”
“All of us on the jury were struck by the film’s clear and powerful message, which affirms young women’s sexual curiosity and desire while clearly saying no to sexual violence,” stated the jury, as quoted by the entertainment publication Variety.
“The style of the film is also original. The sweet, poppy feeling that fascinates the audience in the first half of the film becomes darker as the story progresses, making us shudder,” they added.
Like & Share became the first Indonesian film to win the Osaka Asian Film Festival’s best picture award. It is also the third Indonesian film to snatch a prize at the festival after 2011’s Lovely Man (the special mention award) and 2018’s Aruna & Her Palate (the ABC TV award).
Known in the industry as a prominent screenwriter, Gina wins the award for Like & Share as only her third feature-length film as a director after 2019’s Dua Garis Biru (Two Blue Lines) and 2021’s Cinta Pertama, Kedua & Ketiga (First, Second & Third Love).
The Osaka Asian Film Festival is an annual film festival held in Osaka, Japan, that raises Asian films to the fore. Starting in 2005, this year’s festival ran from March 10 to 19.
