Malaysian delegation learns about PNM's ultra-micro empowerment scheme

T

he empowerment scheme implemented by PNM for its ultra-micro clients has attracted the attention of micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) observers and practitioners from Malaysia. The combination of financing and business assistance through financial, intellectual and social capital has become a unique attraction, leading to PNM serving nearly 22 million customers, while surpassing Grameen Bank.

This holistic funding approach prompted a Malaysian delegation, together with the Indonesian Desa Emas Foundation (YDEI), to visit PNM and learn firsthand how PNM helps women entrepreneurs scale up their businesses.

YDEI Chairman Dr. Aries Muftie and the delegation were impressed by the use of technology displayed through a real-time monitoring dashboard that tracks PNM’s business activities across Indonesia. Moreover, they had the opportunity to interact directly with PNM Mekaar clients.

PNM President Director Arief Mulyadi expressed his gratitude for choosing PNM as a benchmarking destination. He believes that efforts to advance grassroots businesses should be pursued in all countries, as they align with the broader goals of the SDGs.

"This is a great opportunity for us to share PNM’s empowerment scheme. Hopefully, it can be modified to suit Malaysia’s conditions and become an opportunity to strengthen ultra-micro businesses across Asia, allowing them to shine and play a bigger role in the global economy," Arief explained.

He also cited examples of PNM’s clients who have successfully ventured into exports, despite starting with small home-based businesses. Arief firmly believes that optimal service and the addition of intellectual and social capital can foster an entrepreneurial spirit among housewives.
