ihak berwenang Indonesia dan Selandia Baru bersukacita selama akhir pekan saat Philip Mehrtens, pilot Selandia Baru yang disandera selama 19 bulan oleh kelompok bersenjata Papua, dibebaskan pada Sabtu 23 September.

Mehrtens bekerja untuk maskapai penerbangan Indonesia Susi Air ketika ia diculik pada 7 Februari 2023. Penculiknya adalah faksi Tentara Pembebasan Nasional Papua Barat (TPNPB) yang dipimpin oleh Egianus Kogoya di Nduga, provinsi Pegunungan Papua.

Anggota Operasi Perdamaian Cartenz, satuan tugas gabungan yang beranggotakan polisi dan militer yang ditugaskan untuk mengatasi kelompok kriminal bersenjata (KKB) dan memulihkan perdamaian di wilayah tersebut, menjemput Mehrtens pada Sabtu pagi di sebuah desa di Nduga. Petugas medis kemudian memeriksa kondisi fisik dan psikologis sang pilot sebelum ia diangkut ke Timika, Papua.

Keluarga Mehrtens mengucapkan terima kasih kepada TPNPB, sayap bersenjata Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM). Ucapan terima kasih disampaikan karena mereka telah merawat pilot tersebut selama ia ditawan.

Pihak keluarga juga menyampaikan rasa terima kasih kepada Egianus dan para pejuang karena telah "menjaga Phil tetap aman dan sehat sesuai kemampuan mereka". Pihak keluarga menghargai mereka karena telah membiarkan pilot tersebut "menyampaikan beberapa pesan" selama ditawan, untuk mengabarkan pada keluarga bahwa ia masih hidup.

Selama ditawan di pedesaan Papua, Mehrtens beberapa kali muncul sebentar dalam pesan video. Pesan ditujukan kepada keluarganya dan pemerintah Selandia Baru.
