Speaking after the meeting, the chair of the Jokowi National Secretariat (Seknas Jokowi) volunteer group, Rambun Tjajo, said the President had called on his supporters to continue backing his policies until the conclusion of his term in 2024 and then to vote for a candidate who would advance his current agenda.
resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo held a meeting on Monday with his volunteer groups at the presidential office during which he called on all his supporters to back political candidates who would promote policies that would protect his legacy.
"This is not about one person; this is about the program. We should not change the program once we have a new person at the top," Rambun told reporters after the meeting.
Rambun added that there had been no discussion of any term-limit extension for Jokowi once he concluded his second – and constitutionally final – five-year term in 2024.
The volunteer group proposed to Jokowi that his successor be a political candidate who supported pluralism and would abide by the country's five principles of Pancasila, Rambun noted.
Earlier this year, Seknas Jokowi began drafting a campaign platform for the incumbent’s eventual choice of candidate to run to succeed him in the 2024 general election, lining up suggestions for priority legislation to be pursued should the presidential hopeful be elected.
Seknas Jokowi, which has backed the President since 2014, said it was also devising programs to be included in the state’s 2025-2045 National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN), with the primary goal of offering it up to Jokowi’s eventual nominees.
The President has been telling his support groups to wait for his signal to back a candidate of his choosing in the next election, leaving open a small avenue of speculation that he may indeed have ambitions for a currently unconstitutional third term.
