ndonesia has increased its emissions reduction target to bring its policies more in line with global goals, but environmentalists say the revisions still fail to respond adequately to the climate crisis.
On Sept. 23, the country submitted an updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat.
According to an Environment and Forestry Ministry statement, the revised NDC augmented Indonesia’s national policies on climate change to implement a decision reached at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland.
The COP26 agreement asks parties to increase NDC targets to be more in line with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
According to the updated NDC, Indonesia is aiming to reduce its emissions by 31.89 percent independently or 43.2 percent with international assistance by 2030, a slight increase from the 29 percent and 41 percent, respectively, outlined in the first NDC target submitted in 2016 and retained in a revised NDC last year.
The forest and land use sector is expected to be the largest contributor to emissions reduction, accounting for a 25.4 percent reduction in overall emissions from the baseline figure, or 729 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. The second largest is set to be the energy sector, accounting for a 15.5 percent reduction, or 446 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, followed by waste at 1.5 percent, agriculture at 0.4 percent and industries at 0.3 percent.
