he National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported on Tuesday morning that the death toll from Monday’s earthquake near Cianjur regency, West Java, had risen to 103, with 25 people still missing.
BNPB spokesman Abdul Muhari said in a written statement that 377 people had been injured in Cianjur, one in Bandung regency, 10 in Sukabumi and two in Bogor regency, following the 5.6-magnitude earthquake.
A total of 7,060 people have fled to evacuation centers in Cianjur, as 3,075 houses were lightly damaged, 33 were moderately damaged and 59 were heavily damaged
Abdul said local disaster mitigation agencies were still gathering data on the victims, the extent of the damage and the urgent needs of those affected.
The epicenter of the shallow earthquake was located near Cianjur. Falling buildings and landslides triggered by the seismic event were responsible for most of the deaths in the area.
The main quake has been followed by at least 118 smaller aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 1.5 to 4.2.
Search and rescue operations have been made more challenging by severed road links and lost power in parts of the largely rural, mountainous region.
The regency administration has declared a state of emergency for the next 30 days.
BNPB has called on residents in Cianjur and surrounding regencies to leave their homes if they are not feeling safe and to remain vigilant for additional aftershocks. (dre)
