ace teams have begun to arrive at Lake Toba in North Sumatra for the upcoming F1 PowerBoat Championship slated to be held over the weekend.
Around 20 drivers spread across 10 teams from six countries will compete on the lake, which was formed by a violent prehistoric volcanic eruption 74 thousand years ago.
The team members from China, Finland, India and Italy arrived through Kualanamu International Airport in Deli Serdang and Silangit International Airport in Toba.
Ardon Marbun, executive general manager of Silangit Airport, said that as of Wednesday more than 50 crew members had arrived through the airport.
The F1 Powerboat World Championship is an international motorboat racing competition for powerboats organized by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM).
On Monday, North Sumatra Governor Edy Rahmayadi said President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo would arrive in Lake Toba on Friday to watch the race.
Edy said Lake Toba would play host to the championship race for the next five years and expect that it would boost the economy in the region.
The governor predicted that the race would bring around Rp 212 billion (US$13.8 million) in profit from jobs, accommodation, transportation and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as well as other tourism sectors. (dre)
