President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo shared a ride in the presidential limousine over the weekend during a visit to Boyolali, Central Java, amid speculation that the relationship of the two politicians was on the rocks following the cancellation of the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
In a video posted on Ganjar's Instagram account, the President and the Central Java Governor are seen exiting the Presidential car from the back seat before greeting onlookers surrounding the vehicle.
Ganjar is later seen sitting in the front seat after the two wrapped up their visit to a traditional market in Boyolali.
"Accompanying Bapak Jokowi at Selo Market Boyolali to check on prices of goods ahead of the Idul Fitri holiday," Ganjar wrote in the caption of the Instagram post from his handle @ganjar_pranowo.
Jokowi was reportedly furious with Ganjar after the Central Java governor lent his support to calls to bar the Israeli team from playing in the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia. Ganjar, an Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician, joined Balinese Governor Wayan Koster, also a PDI-P politician, in the anti-Israel push.
It was reported that the decision to oppose the Israeli team’s participation came directly from top leadership of the PDI-P.
Analysts have said that rejecting the participation of the Israeli team may have served as a test of Ganjar’s loyalty to the PDI-P leadership, who are considering nominating him for president in 2024.
