Indonesia Decides

Following a flurry of meetings between political elites, Democratic Party chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) met with his National Awakening Party (PKB) counterpart Muhaimin “Cak Imin” Iskandar on Wednesday evening.

Lasting around two hours, Agus and Muhaimin met held behind closed doors at the Cikeas, West Java, residence of former president, Democratic Party founder and Agus’ father Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), who also attended the meeting.

At a press conference following the meeting, the two party leaders admitted to wooing each other for next year’s 2024 general election.

“Yeah, we both tried to court each other, but in a healthy sense. We exchanged our opinions and it was a very fluid discussion,” Agus told reporters. “There were no vulgar attempts to try and influence each other.”

He said that even if the two parties currently stood on opposite sides of the aisle, they still had plenty in common.

The Democrats are one of the two opposition parties in the House of Representatives, with the other being the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).

The two parties, along with the technically pro-government Nasdem Party, are members of the Coalition for Change and Unity (KPP), which has declared its support for former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan’s presidential bid.
