orruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Firli Bahuri failed to appear for a second round of police questioning on Tuesday in relation to the alleged extortion of former agriculture minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo.
Firli was absent from his second summons for questioning at the Jakarta Police headquarters in South Jakarta, citing a scheduling conflict with his work. The controversial KPK leader had skipped his first subpoena on Oct. 22 for a similar reason – although he turned up for another questioning session later in the same month.
KPK deputy chairman Nurul Ghufron said his office had informed the police investigators of Firli’s absence, saying that Firli had a working visit to Aceh, Kompas.com reported.
Firli’s absence once again prompted criticism, including from former KPK investigator Yudi Purnomo Harahap.
Yudi expressed his disappointment on Tuesday that Firli had failed to serve as a role model for law enforcement and warned that his noncompliance could set a bad example for corruption witnesses subpoenaed by the KPK.
“Firli should have been aware that his behavior can create a negative perception of the KPK as a law enforcement agency,” Yudi said in a statement.
