The South Jakarta Police and residents discovered the deceased children in their home on Wednesday, with indications that they had been suffocated. The victims’ father, identified only as P, 41, who was also at the crime scene, has since been named a suspect.
The mother of the children, identified only as D, 40, had been undergoing treatment at a hospital for injuries resulting from alleged domestic abuse by the father when the murders took place. She attended the funeral on Sunday after receiving permission from the hospital.
“She wanted to attend [the funeral]. It was approved [by the hospital], her physical and mental condition were checked beforehand,” said South Jakarta Police criminal investigations chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Bintoro, who also attended the funeral, as quoted by Kumparan.
Bintoro said P had confessed to the murders.
“Based on the suspect’s confession, the murders were done by smothering the victim’s mouths one by one. After [the victim] had stopped breathing for 15 minutes, the suspect then moved on to the next one,” he said as quoted by Detik.
Along with the dead bodies of his children, the suspect was also found with multiple laceration injuries on his body and was suspected to have tried to commit suicide after killing his four children.
The suspect is currently undergoing treatment at hospital for his injuries and is scheduled for psychiatric evaluation.
If found guilty, P will be charged under Articles 338 and 340 of the Criminal Code along with other provisions in the Child Protection Law.
“[He] faces up to a lifetime in prison or the death penalty,” said Bintoro.
