The Defense Minister recently handed over five NC-212i light transport airplanes and eight H225M heavy helicopters delivered by state-owned aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia to the Indonesian Air Force.
he Indonesian Air Force has received several new aircraft from Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, who symbolically handed over light transport aircraft and rotorcraft on two separate occasions in the last two weeks of the year.
On the most recent occasion, Prabowo handed over five NC212i light transport aircraft on Dec. 19 at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base (AFB) in East Jakarta to then-Air Force deputy chief of staff Marshal Agustinus Gustaf Brugman, who was replaced the following day with Marshal Andyawan Martono Putra.
During the handover ceremony, Prabowo unveiled the logo of the 4th Squadron and christened the new fleet by pouring flower water over the nosecone of one aircraft. He then threw a ceramic vessel onto the ground, breaking it.
Made by state-owned aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI), the NC212i are to be deployed with the 4th Squadron at Abdulrachman Saleh AFB in Malang, East Java.
The NC212i is the latest version of the venerable C212 Aviocar, which the squadron has been using since the 1970s. Originally designed and manufactured by Spanish aircraft maker CASA, now part of pan-European aerospace and defense firm Airbus, which has transferred all production of C212 to PTDI.
The twin prop aircraft can be used in various types of missions, such as aerial photography, air navigation, medical evacuations (medevacs), troop transport and rainmaking through weather modification technology.
