Vice presidential candidate Mahfud MD said at a campaign event in Semarang on Tuesday that he would resign from the cabinet.
Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) chairman Kaesang Pangarep has said he appreciates vice presidential candidate Mahfud MD’s plan to resign as coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister but that the ministry still needs his leadership.
"We respect Prof. Mahfud as the coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister," Kaesang said on Wednesday, as quoted by kumparan.com.
On Tuesday, Mahfud said during a campaign event in Semarang that he would resign from the cabinet.
“I have been planning to resign for a long time, since before the first presidential debate,” he said.
“That way, I’ll be able to reveal the actual data more freely, and it will be more ethical for me to access that data without being in the government.”
The minister claimed that he had not resigned yet because he wanted to set a good example of a government official who was also an electoral candidate.
He said he was waiting for the right time to resign, out of respect for President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who appointed him.
