he Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that land subsidence along the northern coast of Central Java has compounded the severe inundation during this year's rainy season.
BMKG chair Dwikorita Karnawati said in a press briefing on Thursday that cities worst affected by flooding in the northern part of Central Java like Pekalongan, Semarang and Demak, also experienced severe cases of land subsidence.
"Our own surveys have recorded this land-subsidence phenomenon," Dwikorita said, as quoted by Antara.
Based on the BMKG survey land in parts of the three cities is subsiding by at least 10 centimeters per year, a condition that had persisted in the past 10 years.
"Due to this land subsidence some places in those areas now are below sea level," she said.
Massive flooding has inundated major parts of cities in the northern coast of Central Java in the past few days.
The inundation occurred after torrential downpours hit cities such as Semarang and Demak.
