Former graft convict Irman Gusman has won a seat at the Regional Representatives Council (DPD), in a revote in the West Sumatra electoral district earlier this month that was ordered by the Constitutional Court.

His victory and the results of the revote in West Sumatra on July 13 were certified by the General Elections Commission’s (KPU) national office in Jakarta on Sunday.

According to the final vote tally from the KPU West Sumatra office, Irman won the fourth-highest number of votes of over 176,000 with 15 other candidates on the ballot. The result earned him one of four seats available for the West Sumatra electoral district.

Irman was barred from running for the election in February after KPU West Sumatra excluded him from the ballot because he had yet to clear a five-year waiting period required for some graft convicts to run for office. Irman was released from prison in 2019 after serving a three-year sentence for accepting bribes.

Irman challenged the KPU West Sumatra decision at the Jakarta State Administrative Court and won the case. The administrative court ordered the poll body to allow Irman to contest the February election, saying that he did not have to wait for five years before running for public office since his prison sentence was less than five years.

Yet, the West Sumatra KPU ignored the ruling and held the election without Irman on the ballot.

But four months after the election, the Constitutional Court ruled in favor of Irman’s petition against KPU West Sumatra and ordered the revote with Irman in the race.
