Former East Java governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa has a commanding lead in the race for governor of the province with the support of 61.2 percent of voters a survey found, leaving former social affairs minister Tri Rismaharini in a far second with 26 percent.
Two months before voting day, Khofifah, who is running with her former deputy Emil Dardak, has the best polling figures of the three pairs running for the governorship, according to the survey by Jakarta-based pollster Indikator Politik Indonesia, which result published on Sunday.
Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Tri Rismaharini, better known as Risma, is running with Muslim scholar Zahrul “Gus Han” Azhar Asad.
National Awakening Party (PKB) lawmaker Luluk Nur Hamida and running mate and fellow party member Lukmanul Hakim are in third position with 2.2 percent, the survey found.
Khofifah’s lead was thanks to not only her popularity, but also her deputy’s, who was seen as a favorable candidate on his own, said Burhanuddin Muhtadi, executive director of Indikator Politik Indonesia.
“So it’s not only Khofifah’s electoral power, her deputy also has a decent contribution,” Burhanuddin said, as quoted by kompas.com.
The survey was conducted from Sept. 9 to 14 and a total of 1,000 people were interviewed face-to-face. Indikator said the survey had a margin of error of approximately 3.2 percent at a confidence level of 95 percent.
