ndonesian Red Cross (PMI) incumbent chairman Jusuf Kalla has been reelected by acclamation to the top spot of one of the country’s oldest humanitarian organizations.
Kalla’s reelection came on Monday morning, on the second day of the national meeting held by the organization every five years to appoint its leader and to discuss a work plan.
The PMI was supposed to hold a vote for the chairmanship on Monday evening, but the plan was fast-tracked because Kalla had received a majority of the support from the PMI’s regional offices on Sunday night.
Golkar Party politician and head of the Indonesian Blood Donor Committee (KDDI) advisory board Agung Laksono, who is not a member of the PMI, announced last week his intention to enter the PMI chairmanship race and challenge Kalla.
But Agung saw his candidacy canceled after he failed to meet a minimum threshold of support from PMI members.
“Support for Agung failed to reach 20 percent of [PMI regional office] representatives entitled to [attend the national meeting], so he failed to become a potential candidate [for PMI chair],” head of this year’s national meeting, Fachmi Idris, said in a statement on Monday.
“As for Kalla, he had the support of more than 50 percent of the representatives in attendance. When this happens, as per PMI regulations, the candidate is named the chair of the PMI by acclamation,” he added.
