The BMKG has warned fishermen and sailors to exercise caution as Tropical Cyclone Zelia brings turbulent seas and after two maritime accidents took place as a result of bad weather.
he Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued warnings for high waves caused by Tropical Cyclone Zelia in the Indian Ocean, west of Australia.
The advisory, in effect until Feb. 17, is directed at fishermen and ship operators in Indonesian waters.
The BMKG reported winds of between 6 and 25 knots in northern Indonesia, blowing from the northwest, while winds in southern areas were blowing from the west.
“The highest wind speeds are observed in the southern Indian Ocean near Java, […] the Pacific Ocean near Papua and the Arafura Sea,” the BMKG said on Friday morning, as quoted by tempo.co.
The phenomenon has caused waves of between 2.5 meters and 4 meters in the Indian Ocean off Lampung, southern Banten and western Java. Similar conditions have been reported off the southern coasts of Yogyakarta, Central Java, East Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara.
Pacific waters near Papua and West Papua may experience waves of up to 4 meters.
The BMKG also highlighted waves of between 1.25 meters and 2.5 meters in the northern Malacca Strait and the Indian Ocean from Aceh to Bengkulu.
