Forty-six human trafficking victims arrive from Myanmar Alleged victims of scam centers board a boat to cross the river on the Myanmar-Thai border on Feb. 12, 2025, to be met by Thai Army soldiers as they are repatriated from Kyauk Khet in Myanmar's Myawaddy township. More than 260 people, many visibly injured or bruised, were rescued from an illicit scam center along the Myanmar border this week and handed over to Thailand, following a series of crackdowns on the illegal operations. A

total of 46 human trafficking victims from Indonesia were safely repatriated from Myanmar and arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Thursday night. Among them was a former member of the Indramayu Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) in West Java named Robiin.

Authorities explained that the victims were first transported to Bangkok before being flown back to the country on two separate flights. They were welcomed by representatives from the Foreign Ministry and the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) upon arrival.

Foreign Ministry citizen protection director Judha Nugraha said at least 270 other Indonesian nationals were still trapped in Myanmar’s rebel-controlled Myawaddy region, where online scam rings operate.

“The number is quite big,” Judha told journalists in Tangerang, further calling on Indonesian citizens to be wary of high-paying job offers abroad.

Indonesia is currently working with Myanmar and Thailand authorities to repatriate the remaining victims, Judha continued.

According to AFP, thousands of foreign nationals are expected to be repatriated from Myanmar’s online scam centers in the coming weeks. The centers are run by criminal gangs and staffed by foreigners, many of whom say they were trafficked and forced to swindle people around the world in protracted internet scams.
