T

hai police recently rescued an Indonesian national named Robiin, a former member of the Indramayu Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) in West Java, from a human trafficking operation in Myanmar, amid a concerning surge in the number of Indonesians trafficked to the region.

Muhammad Solihin, a former Indramayu councilor and Robiin's acquaintance, said the NasDem Party politician was expected to return home in a few weeks, pending the issuance of his travel documents in lieu of a passport (SPLP).

"Praise be to God, he is free now and awaiting SPLP verification in Thailand," Solihin recently told Kompas.

Robiin’s wife, Yuli Yasmi, also expressed her gratitude for his rescue, thanking Coordinating Social Empowerment Minister Muhaimin Iskandar for his support throughout the process.

Robiin was trafficked in September 2023 after applying for a job with a textile company in Thailand. He said he saw the job advertisement on Facebook and was attracted by its high salary.

However, upon arrival in Thailand, he was transported to a town in Myanmar near the border, where he was forced to work in an online scam center.
