T

he current inflation in the number of generals and high-ranking officers in the military and police is not accompanied by a higher budget; therefore, it might sacrifice operational and maintenance budgets, a former top brass in the Indonesian Navy said.

“When I was in the Navy, there was only one vice admiral, the deputy chief of staff. Now in the Navy alone there are five three-star admirals,” former Navy deputy chief of staff Vice Adm. (ret) Achmad Taufiqurrahman told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

Taufiqurrahman was the deputy chief of staff from 2017-2018.

He compared the current situation to a previous era when the total number of general-level officers in the entire structure of the Indonesian Military (TNI), known as the Indonesian Armed Forces [ABRI] back then, was reduced to only 177 officers.

The reduction was designed by the then-ABRI commander, Gen. LB Moerdani in the early 1980s.

“Currently, there are almost 300 flag officers in the Navy alone,” he said.

Taufiqurrahman said that the swelling number of flag officers took place with a relatively stagnant budget.
