N. Sumatra prosecutors arrest two suspects in Pelindo tugboat procurement case

Prosecutors found the tugboats, worth Rp 135.81 billion (US$8.15 million), were not up to specifications, the physical progress deviated from contract requirements and the payments were not in line with the work progress.

he North Sumatra Prosecutor’s Office has arrested two suspects in a corruption case related to the procurement of two tugboats worth Rp 135.81 billion (US$8.15 million) by state-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) I recently.

The two suspects have been identified only as HAP, director of engineering at Pelindo I from 2018 to 2021 and BS, president director at state-owned shipyard PT Dok dan Perkapalan Surabaya from 2017 to 2021.

Acting head of the information and legal section at the North Sumatra Prosecutor’s Office, Muhammada Husairi said on Sept. 25 that both suspects were detained after investigators acquired at least two items of evidence.

“Based on evidence, witnesses’ testimonies and acquired documents, investigators named HAP and BS as suspects,” Husairi told reporters at the prosecutor’s office.

He said that both suspects were being held at Medan Detention Center for 20 days, until Oct. 14.

Husairi said the case began with the procurement contract for two tugboats but upon investigation, it was found that the tugboats did not meet specifications, the process deviated from contract requirements and the payments were not in line with the progress of the work.
