A

fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon at a residential tower for construction workers in Nusantara, East Kalimantan, raising safety concerns in addition to ongoing social issues surrounding the development of the nation’s future capital.

Nusantara Capital City (IKN) Authority spokesperson Troy Pantouw said the incident began at around 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 in several rooms on the second, third and fourth floors of Tower 14.

He said a total of 15 firefighting units, consisting of seven fire engines and eight tanker fire trucks, were quickly deployed to tackle the fire.

“By around 7 p.m., the fire had been fully extinguished by our personnel with support from firefighting authorities, who arrived on-site in a timely manner and successfully brought the incident under control,” Troy said.

All workers housed in the affected tower were safely accounted for and were being relocated to alternative accommodation in other towers while authorities investigated the cause of the incident, he added.

The fire is the first major safety incident to occur in Nusantara, which is under development as the country’s “political capital”.
