tate-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) on Monday launched a new commuter train service designed specifically for farmers and small traders, in an effort to strengthen rural supply chains and support local economies.
KAI Commuter VP Corporate Secretary Karina Amanda said all commuter trains operating on the Rangkasbitung–Merak route in Banten are now equipped with a special carriage dedicated to transporting farmers, traders and their goods.
“The carriage can accommodate up to 73 passengers, and there will be seven round trips per day between Rangkasbitung and Merak,” she said on Sunday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
“This special service aims to ease mobility for local business owners, particularly in transporting agricultural products and merchandise.”
To accommodate cargo, the carriage layout has been modified: seats are now arranged along the walls, leaving the center aisle open for produce, packaged goods and easier movement. The width of vestibule doors has also been expanded from 800 to 900 millimeters, and several partition walls have been removed to improve accessibility.
