P

resident Prabowo Subianto pledged to accelerate temporary housing construction and infrastructure repairs in West Sumatra during his fourth visit to disaster-hit regions in the northern part of Sumatra Island on Thursday.

But the promise has been met with skepticism as the central government’s disaster handling has come under severe public scrutiny since deadly floods and landslides struck three Sumatran provinces in late November.

During his visit to one temporary housing site in Agam regency, Prabowo set a one-month deadline to complete temporary shelters for displaced people.

“I am happy to see that construction of the temporary housing has begun. The temporary housing will be completed within a month, so you’ll no longer have to live in tents,” Prabowo told local residents on Thursday.

Beyond temporary housing, the President said the government would begin constructing permanent housing for disaster-affected families, promising homes of around 70 square meters of adequate quality to ensure safety and comfort.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said that it planned to build more than 40,000 temporary housing units, comprising 2,559 units in West Sumatra, 5,158 in North Sumatra and 36,328 in Aceh, adding that the number of units may be adjusted depending on evolving conditions on the ground.
