T

he Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an extreme weather warning following the formation of Tropical Cyclone Jenna in the Indian Ocean southwest of Banten, which could trigger hydrometeorological disasters.

BMKG reported that Jenna developed from tropical cyclone seed 91S, which appeared on Jan. 3 at 1 a.m. in the southwestern Indian Ocean off Lampung. The system reached tropical cyclone intensity on Monday at 1 p.m.

Currently a Category 2 cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 55 knots (100 km/h) and a central pressure of 990 hPa, Jenna is expected to intensify to Category 3 within 24 hours, with winds reaching 65 knots (120 km/h) and a pressure of 979 hPa.

BMKG forecaster Lintang Alya emphasized that despite moving away from land, the cyclone remains powerful.

"This tropical cyclone can accelerate winds in surrounding areas," Lintang said on Wednesday as quoted by Kompas.com.

BMKG has warned that Tropical Cyclone Jenna could produce waves of 1.25 to 2.5 meters in several areas, including the northern Malacca Strait, the southwestern Indian Ocean off Aceh, west of Nias and the Mentawai Islands, west of Bengkulu and Lampung, south of Banten and Bali, south of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), the southern Karimata Strait and the western Java Sea.
