14 Aceh regions end emergency status, begin post-disaster recovery

T

he Aceh administration announced on Thursday evening that it was transitioning to the recovery phase following the flooding and landslides in late November that hit 18 cities and regencies in the province, as well as parts of neighboring North Sumatra and West Sumatra.

“We declare a transition from the emergency status to disaster recovery for 90 days starting on Friday [and lasting] until April 29, 2026,” Aceh Governor Muzakir Manaf said in Banda Aceh on Jan. 29, during a virtual meeting of Aceh Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda).

Muzakir also ordered the heads of all provincial agencies to continue rescue efforts and guarantee the provision of basic needs and protection of vulnerable groups, including evacuees.

Aceh province spokesman Muhammad MTA said the post-disaster recovery phase was declared based on a quick assessment from the Aceh Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBA), noting that Only four regencies are still in the emergency response” phase.

“As many as 14 out of 18 cities and regencies have transitioned to the recovery phase,” Muhammad told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

He added that these cities and regencies would use the recovery phase to optimize resources, including financing from the provincial budget, and prepare a recovery plan for implementation toward the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase.
