olice in Riau have arrested five people suspected of being involved in illegal logging activities in two separate cases in the regencies of Pelalawan and Bengkalis.
The Riau Police Special Crime Investigation (Reskrimsus) Directorate arrested two suspects, identified as JP and MM, who worked as drivers when they were transporting processed timber without official documents.
Reskrimsus director Sr. Comr. Ade Kuncoro Ridwan said that the case started from a tip-off from the public on illegal logging activities at Kurumutan Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerumutan district, Pelalawan regency.
First Insp. Yola Yulistia Resi led detectives from Sub-directorate IV Ditreskrimsus, specializing in environmental crimes, to investigate the case on Jan. 29 at about 5 p.m.
“The detectives intercepted two Mitsubishi Canter trucks at about 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 30. When stopped, the drivers could not provide a forest product permit (SKSHH),” Ade said.
“Each truck was carrying some 10 cubic meters of mixed forest wood in Simpang Pematang Tengah, Mak Teduh village.”
An initial investigation revealed that the processed timber was from the Kerumutan Wildlife Sanctuary conservation area in Kapau village, Kerumutan district.
