tate-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Regional Division I North Sumatra asked the public not to throw stones at passing trains as the offense damages public facilities and threatens passengers’ lives.
Division acting spokesman Anwar Yuli Prastyo said there were 35 cases of stones thrown at trains in North Sumatra. He said the company needed to educated the public so that there were no more stones thrown at passing trains.
“Throwing stones not only damages train facilities but also directly risks passengers’ lives,” he told reporters on Saturday.
Anwar added that the action violates Article 194 clause 1 of the Criminal Code for deliberately endangering public traffic in railways, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
Clause 2 of the article stipulates that if the action leads to a fatality, the perpetrator could be sent to jail for 20 years or a life sentence.
“These are the punishments for those who throw stones at passing trains,” Anwar said.
He asked the public to stop vandalism, which endangers the safety of train passengers. He also reminded the public not to carry out any activities around railway tracks.
