oastal erosion on Rangsang Island in Meranti Islands regency, Riau, is threatening not only the state border but also impacting food resilience in the region, especially in the Coastal Rangsang and West Rangsang districts.
Kedabu Rapat village chief Mahadi said erosion was the largest threat for his village as well as other villages in Coastal Rangsang district. He was worried that the villages, which directly border the Malacca Strait, would disappear if no measures were taken.
“There have been so many losses because of the erosion. From disappearing plots of land to loss of agricultural land,” he said on Thursday.
“Many plants, such as coconut, coffee, palm oil, betel nut and banana trees were lost after being swept away by waves.”
Erosion on the island tends to increase during the year-end during the northerly wind. In December last year there were coastal landslides of up to 10 meters in several locations because of strong waves.
“We were glad because recently a team from the National Border Management Agency [BNPP] came for a visit and hopefully, they can convey the situation to the central government,” Mahadi said.
“Hopefully President Prabowo Subianto will prioritize the issue with related ministries.”
