olice have arrested the head of an Islamic boarding school in Pati, Central Java, accused of sexually assaulting several students, after he spent several days on the run.
The suspect, identified only by the initials AS, was apprehended in Bakalan village, Wonogiri regency, Central Java, in the early hours of Thursday.
Central Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Artanto said the Pati Police, with assistance from the Central Java Police’s General Crimes Directorate, had launched an intensive manhunt for the suspect prior to the arrest.
“We had been pursuing the suspect and were prepared to make a forcible arrest if necessary. However, he did not resist when officers apprehended him,” Artanto said on Thursday.
Artanto added that police were continuing to investigate the alleged sexual abuse case by gathering additional evidence and encouraging other victims to come forward.
“We urge victims to speak up. Their identities will be protected,” he said.
The Pati Police named AS a suspect on April 28 and summoned him for questioning on Monday, but he failed to comply with the summons. Investigators had planned to issue a second summons on Thursday; however, after discovering that AS had not been seen at his residence for nearly two months, police escalated the case and launched a manhunt.
