Review: ‘The Shallows’ a slick masterpiece on survival "The Shallows" features Blake Lively as Nancy Adams, a med-school student who recently lost her mother to an illness. (Sony Pictures/-)

eaving you yelling at the screen or holding onto your seats, The Shallows encapsulates all the thrill of survival in 87 short minutes.

Blake Lively stars as Nancy Adams, a med-school student who recently lost her mother to an illness. Trying to reestablish a connection, she travels solo and heads out to go surfing at this secret, unnamed beach in Mexico. It’s all gnarly and radical waves until she is attacked by a great white shark and left stranded on a rock, considerably far away from the shore with no one remotely close by.

Watch Nancy grab courage by the collar, and fight this beastly shark among brilliant cinematography, creative costume design and top-notch acting. For real, props to Lively for her sensational performance. The touch of hyperrealism in the camera work blends ridiculously well with her exceptional acting.

Kudos to Jaume Collet-Serra as well, who also directed the psycho-thriller Orphan. The movie’s plot and flow was incredibly easy to follow, and what’s great is that despite the simple plot-structure, it keeps you focused.

Major points should be given for the refrain of the change in the water’s color from blue to bright crimson red, the camera angles that made it really seem like you were in the water with her, and the absence of complications in both the casting and premise. (jam/kes)
