ore than 1,500 traditional and temporary art pieces are on display at Bazaar Art Jakarta (BAJ), open till Sunday at the Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place.

Under the theme Food for Soul #IndonesianPride, the collection includes artwork from 19 local galleries such as Paskal, Zola Zulu, Artsphere, Art1 and ROH, as well as paintings by classic Indonesian artists such as Basoeki Abdullah and Nasirun. The gallery also features a variety of contemporary works from younger generation artists.

Visitors can also marvel at collections from 23 overseas galleries from countries such as the US, Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, France, Malaysia, the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong and Spain. Fans of art will be happy to see paintings from Indonesian maestro Affandi, as well as artwork collected by Sotheby’s.

“We do not want this art fair to be exclusive, but rather to educate and make the country more open-minded, civilized, tolerant and international,” said BAJ fair director Vivi Yip during the fair's opening ceremony on Thursday. “We're about to face the ASEAN Economic Community. We wouldn’t want to [only] be a market, would we? We want to be producers. This can be started through the art sector.”

In addition to displaying artwork, BAJ is also holding other events including mall art installations (MALLart), art workshops (EDUart), art discussions with practitioners (TALKart), and the art charity auction for Yayasan Seni Rupa Indonesia (Indonesian Fine Arts Foundation). (kes)
