enowned textile maker and owner of Bin House, Josephine “Obin” Komara, has suggested the government should make Fridays Hari Kain Indonesia (Indonesian fabrics day).
“Indonesia is rich [in traditional fabrics], but we only focus on batik. That’s ironic,” Obin told The Jakarta Post during the Lebih Dekat Dengan Obin (Getting acquainted with Obin) event at Alun Alun Indonesia in Grand Indonesia shopping mall in Central Jakarta on Thursday.

The designer believes that by declaring Friday Indonesian fabrics day, it could encourage people to wear more local fabrics. “They can use ‘ulos’ and other types of Indonesian fabrics,” she said.
In the interview, she also said the government was always the last party to respond. “After all of us wore batik, then the government finally declared National Batik Day,” she said, adding that she came up with the idea of Indonesian fabrics day because of this. (kes)
