Idul Fitri is less than a week away, and most of the city's residents are geared up for mudik (annual homebound exodus).

To mark the beginning of mudik, Google Indonesia has launched on Monday a doodle of its logo dedicated to the annual tradition, called Mudik 2017.

The doodle displays travelers on the road in a variety of vehicles, such as a scooter, a car, a minivan and a bus, heading home with big boxes strapped to the roof. Clicking the logo redirects users to a search page filled with information about mudik.

On its Doodles page, Google gives a brief explanation on what mudik is all about. “City folks take this time to travel far and wide to visit family in rural villages. Travelers get home any way they can,” it explains, listing the different types of transportation used during mudik.

It also mentions that the annual exodus usually empties the cities and can reduce the electricity use in Jakarta "by up to 70%".

Prior to this, Google Indonesia has also created doodles to commemorate special days in the country, such as Sumpah Pemuda (Youth Pledge), National Batik Day, Komodo National Park's anniversary and the 2016 mudik. (asw)
