wo Indonesian films, Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts and The Seen and Unseen, have brought home the Grand Prize at the 2017 Tokyo FILMeX International Film Festival.

The annual festival was held for the 18th time in Tokyo from Nov. 18 to 26.

The winning films' directors are said to receive a cash prize of 750,000 yen (US$6,700) each.

“For me, watching The Seen and Unseen and Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts is a form of celebration of Indonesia’s diverse range of films,” said Ifa Isfansyah, the producer of The Seen and Unseen, in a press release. “When both films were selected [as winners], for me it was a victory for [the diversity of Indonesian cinema].”

The producer of Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts, Rama Adi, expressed his gratitude for the recognition. “This award is for Indonesian cinema,” Rama stated.

The judges assessing films at the festival are figures from different fields of the movie industry, including director Hara Kazuo from Japan, Hong Kong film critic Clarence Tsui and Korean producer Ellen Y.D. Kim.

While Marlina is currently screened at cinemas across the archipelago, The Seen and Unseen is scheduled to have its Indonesian premiere at the Jogja Asian Film Festival in December, with public screening to follow in early 2018. (kes)
