A rare collection from the Samudera Pase Sultanate will be on display in Banda Aceh with a mission to educate the local people about their history and ancestral roots.
collection of historical artifacts from the Samudera Pase Sultanate will be exhibited during the Pekan Kebudayaan Aceh (PKA) 7, or Aceh Cultural Fair, to be held on Aug. 5-15 at Sulthanah Safiatuddin Park in Banda Aceh.
Kompas.com reported that artifacts such as ancient coins, coat of arms, vessels, royal jewelry and traditional musical instruments were among the collection.
“[…] These are rare items, hard to find. We wish to show them to the public at this cultural fair,” Nur Liana, the head of the North Aceh Education and Culture Agency, said on Sunday as quoted by kompas.com.
She added that she hoped the collection would encourage people to visit museums.
“I know for a fact that [the people] want to learn and understand the history of the region,” Liana said.

The Samudera Pase Sultanate of the 13th to 16th centuries was the first and largest kingdom to embrace Islam in the Indonesian archipelago.
Acehnese kingdoms are known for their historical prominence in the region. The 9th-century Peureulak Sultanate was known to be one of the earliest Islamic kingdoms in Southeast Asia, and ruled the area that is East Aceh regency today.
Following Samudera Pase, the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam of the 16th and 17th centuries was a major regional power. (saz/mut)
