A biopic about Indonesian badminton legend and Olympic gold medalist Susy Susanti will be released next year.
usy Susanti – Love All, a biopic about Indonesian badminton legend Susy Susanti, will be released in the first quarter of 2019.
Directed by Sim F. and set in the 1980s and 1990s, it follows the life of Susy Susanti from childhood to when she won a gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. It also highlights some of the most iconic moments of her career, including her road to the finals at the 1989 Sudirman Cup in Jakarta.
The film’s producer, Daniel Mananta, said the idea for the story came about around five years ago. “We wanted to make a film about Susy’s love of Indonesia, God, her parents, badminton and her husband,” Daniel said during a press conference on Sept. 19 at Gelora Bung Karno sports complex in Central Jakarta. “Love is the power that makes her the person she is now, also as one of the people who carried the [2018] Asian Games torch.”

Starring Laura Basuki as Susy Susanti, the film is said to show a different side of the shuttler. “Many people might have only seen me when I was at the top, but the film displays the process, struggle and situation behind it,” Susy said at the press conference, adding that the film would also depict her struggle during the Reform Era in 1998.
Laura Basuki said it took around four months for her to train physically and learn about badminton. “I also asked Susy about the details, including how she felt during the 1992 Summer Olympics, her preparation and training,” Laura said. “I watched her interviews and past matches.”
The film's title, Susy Susanti – Love All, has a double meaning. In badminton, the word “love” means zero points, while “love all” means the score is 0-0. “Both words mean the start of every badminton game and they also signify that we have to start with a clear heart and a deeper love,” said Syarika Bralini, one of the film's five scriptwriters.
Aiming to inspire the youth to achieve their goals, the film also features Farhan as former vice president Try Sutrisno, Lukman Sardi as M.F. Siregar and Dion Wiyoko as Alan Budikusuma, Susy's husband and Olympic champion in badminton. (wng)
