Taman Ismail Marzuki celebrates 50th anniversary with exhibition, performances

Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) arts center celebrated its 50th anniversary on Nov. 10.
Located in Cikini, Central Jakarta, the event’s theme was "Seni Bersama, Bersama Seni" (collective art, collectively with art). Held on Nov. 7-11, the event showcased popular and contemporary paintings by hundreds of artists, along with cultural performances and musical acts.
On the anniversary date, philosopher and environment activist Saras Dewi from the Jakarta Arts Council gave a cultural speech titled “Sembahyang Bhuvana” (prayer for the earth) on humans’ attachment to their environment, in which preserving nature also means preserving human lives.
A choir from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) performed on TIM’s main stage, accompanied by musicians Jalu Pratidina and Saat Syah along with singer Tri Utami. Afterward, musical group Pancaran Sinar Petromak showed off its renditions of 1970’s and 1980's Indonesian hits, while retro pop band White Shoes & The Couples Company acted as the headliner.

On another stage, a wayang kulit (shadow puppet) by puppet master Ki Sigid Ariyanto lasted until the wee hours of morning.
On Nov. 11, traditional theatrical dance act wayang orang (human puppet) and ludruk (traditional drama) from East Java were performed, followed by musical acts from contemporary musicians such as Kunto Aji, Brisia Jodie and Maliq & D’essential.
Since its inauguration by then-Jakarta governor Ali Sadikin on Nov. 10, 1968, TIM has become the center for showcasing the arts for notable Indonesian artists such as WS Rendra and Slamet Abdul Sjukur. With its 50th anniversary, the arts center aims to transform into a public space. (iru/wng)
