A collaboration between rock band Efek Rumah Kaca and contemporary artist Eko Nugroho features art in the form of video, embroidered patches and T-shirts produced by Daging Tumbuh (DGTMB), a brand established by Eko.
ndonesian rock band Efek Rumah Kaca (ERK) and contemporary artist Eko Nugroho launched a collaborative project titled “Hujan jangan marah, biar kami saja saling marah” (Rain, don’t be angry, leave it to us to be angry with one another) at Studio Eko Nugroho in Yogyakarta on Dec. 29, 2018.
The collaboration features visual works in the form of art videos, embroidered patches and T-shirts produced by Daging Tumbuh (DGTMB), a brand established by Eko.
Available in five designs, each of the embroidered patches features pictures and letters based on Efek Rumah Kaca's songs, namely “Sembilu hisapi jemari partai” (Blade sucks up the hands of political parties), “Diabetes adalah sebuah proses kontemplatif" (Diabetes is a contemplative process), Mukjizat hanya dijaman hoax," (Miracles only in the era of hoaxes) "Aku selalu suka sehabis hujan di hutan beton," (Loving after it rains in a concrete forest) and "Atas nama pasar semuanya begitu religius" (In the name of the market everything [is] so religious).
Eko said the works were his visual take on the band’s songs, which frequently highlight social issues, such as environmental damage and tolerance.
“I wanted to collaborate as I love ERK’s songs. [They are] an independent band with down to earth lyrics that speak a lot about social issues, not only about love,” said Eko.
Meanwhile, the T-shirt they designed features the sentence “Hujan jangan marah, biar kami saja saling marah” and a skull.

The sentence is satirical and based on the current political climate ahead of the upcoming election as well as on the band's original song “Hujan Jangan Marah”, which was created in 1999 following a flood in Jakarta.
Efek Rumah Kaca vocalist Cholil Mahmud said the band had asked Eko to collaborate, as they admired of his work.
“We first used Eko’s works during the Soundrenaline music festival in Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, Bali, in September,” said Cholil.
The T-shirt and patches are only available at the DGTMB shop in Yogyakarta and Kios Ojo Keos, a public space owned by the band, in South Jakarta.
Proceeds from the sales will be used to fund Kios Ojo Keos activities.
Cholil said Kios Ojo Keos could be utilized for discussions, music performances and film screenings.
“The collaboration strengthens the messages ERK wanted to share to the public,” said Cholil, expressing hope that it would motivate the band to produce more creative works.
In addition to the launch, Efek Rumah Kaca performed on stage in what was the band's final performance of 2018. The performance also marked the end of an eight-city tour titled “Aku selalu suka bernyanyi di bulan Desember” (I always love singing in December). (jes/wng)
