Here are several places that serve delectable dishes for sahur around Jakarta.
f you are a newcomer to Jakarta and happen to be fasting this Ramadan, the first thing to do is identify where you can have your sahur (predawn meal). Many eateries are closed during the day and open starting from the maghrib (sunset prayer) call to prayer until sahur time but some operate 24 hours a day.
Here are several places that serve delectable sahur around the city, as compiled by kompas.com.
Nasi Kapau Kramat Raya
The renowned nasi Kapau (Kapau-style rice) center in the city, Jl. Kramat Raya, Senen, Central Jakarta is open from about 2 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. The area, famous for its many nasi Kapau stalls, offers an array of delicious Minang cuisine. Jakartans have been well-acquainted with this area since the 1970s, although it wasn’t until 1980 that the city’s small and medium enterprise agency started managing the stalls.
Pro tip: Look for special dishes only sold by Kapau-style vendors such as itik lado mudo (duck cooked in green chili), tambunsu (cow intestine filled with eggs and tofu) and bubur kampiun (sweet porridge-style dessert).
Warteg Warmo
Having existed since 1970, Warteg Warmo is still a late-night establishment famous among South Jakartans and celebrities, as back in the day, it was among the very few places that operated 24 hours. Head to Jl. Tebet Timur Raya No. 1D and find the legendary warteg (Tegal-style eatery). It sells home-style food that has Tegal-style cooking from Central Java, which includes the basic steamed rice, eggs, a selection of chicken and beef dishes, as well as vegetables. What sets Warmo apart from any other regular warteg is its wide selection of food.
Pro tip: For those too lazy to step outside in the wee hours, Warteg Warmo is available to order on app-based food delivery services, which often offer promotional packages.
RM Ampera 2 Tak
If you’re more into Sundanese-style food that features fresh herbs as condiments, RM Ampera 2 Tak on Jl. Cikini Raya is open 24 hours and is ready to serve you at sahur time. Just choose whichever dish you want and wait for it to be reheated.
Pro tip: Those interested in visiting this place to have a full Sundanese-style sahur experience, look for the building with bamboo-woven features on its walls, you won’t miss it.
Bubur Kwang Tung
Those looking for Chinese-style comfort food might opt for a warm congee dish to consume for sahur at Bubur Kwang Tung. Those residing in South Jakarta can go to the branch on Jl. Wolter Monginsidi, while those coming from the north or central area may want to visit the closer Pecenongan branch. The 24-hour halal restaurant serves many types of Chinese congee, from chicken to seafood, as well as other regular dishes such as fried rice, chicken and many more.
Pro tip: Aside from its amazing selection of congee, try the kailan dua rasa (two-flavored Chinese kale) and ask for the whole portion to be fried crispy. (asw)
