Eksotika Bromo presents traditional art, dance performances

The Eksotika Bromo art performance was held as part of the Yadnya Kasada, an offering ceremony by the Tengger people to their gods.

n Saturday and Sunday, tourists flocked to Eksotika Bromo 2019, an annual art and culture event held on the soil of Mount Bromo, Probolinggo, East Java.

Amid the cold weather and cloud of dust from the sandy land, tourists sat on rows of benches and carpets, enthralled by the traditional dances and art performances.

In its third year, Eksotika Bromo was held as part of the Yadnya Kasada ceremony that will culminate on Thursday.

Performed by the Tengger people of Bromo, the ceremony is a form of offering to their gods and gratitude for their blessings. 

Probolinggo Regent Puput Tantriana Sari said Eksotika Bromo was a part of the administration’s effort to develop the traditional art and culture in a bid to attract tourists to Probolinggo.

“The event can be a trigger for other areas. Together, we can make contributions to preserve local culture and attract more visits to Mount Bromo,” she said.

The two-day event showcased traditional attractions from several areas in East Java, such as singo wulung (lion dance) from Bondowoso, jaranan reog kendang (mask dance) from Tulungagung and dongkrek (mask dance) from Madiun.

“Initially I came here to witness the sunrise. As it turned out, there is an event and it is quite entertaining,” said visitor Sriwahyuni from Yogyakarta. 

On Sunday, Eksotika Bromo was acknowledged by the Tourism Ministry as one of the top 30 Events in the Wonderful Indonesia 2019 Events report. (gis/wng)
