Indonesian students win gold, silver and bronze medals at biology olympiad

The participants were required to pass theory tests as well as solve four topics in practical tests, which included biochemical; animal physiology and molecular biology; animal anatomy, ecology, plant systems; and bioinformatics and neurobiology.

team of Indonesian high school students won four medals at the 30th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) held in Szeged, Hungary, on July 14 to 21.

The team comprised Aditya David Wirawan from SMAK 1 Petra in Surabaya, who brought home a gold medal; Nedi Sawego Yogya from SMA Pribadi Bandung in West Java and Made Ayu Utami Intaran from SMAN 21 Jakarta who each won a silver medal; and Hanif Al Husaini from SMAN 1 Salatiga who won a bronze medal.

According to the team coordinator, Ahmad Faizal, the participants were required to pass a theory test as well as solve four topics in practical tests, which included biochemical; animal physiology and molecular biology; animal anatomy, ecology, plant systems; and bioinformatics and neurobiology. 

Last year, four Indonesian students brought home four silver medals at the IBO, which was held in Tehran, Iran. 

The annual IBO competition for high school students has been held since the 1960s. (dmy/kes)
