Joko Anwar's superhero film Gundala will have its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival.

The festival is scheduled to run from Sept. 5 to 15 in Toronto, Canada.

The screening of Gundala will be part of the festival’s Midnight Madness program, which features action, horror and fantasy movies.

Described as an “exhilarating actioner”, Gundala will compete against other films, including Takashi Miike’s First Love and Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space, for the Grolsch People’s Choice Award: Midnight Madness.

“I’m glad to be able to introduce an Indonesian superhero to the international stage,” said the film's co-producer Bismarka Kurniawan in a statement. “As producers, we’d like to say thank you to all the film crew and fans who always support us.”

“This serves as proof that the quality of Gundala has been recognized by international audiences,” Joko Anwar said.

Based on comic books by Harya “Hasmi” Suraminata, Gundala stars Abimana Aryasatya, Tara Basro, Bront Palarae, Muzakki Ramdhan and Ario Bayu.

The film hits Indonesian cinemas on Aug. 29. (wir/kes)
