he annual contemporary art fair Art Jakarta 2019 was officially open on Aug. 30. Taking place in hall A and B of the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Central Jakarta, the art fair will be held until Sunday.
This is the first time the fair is being held in a new venue. Director of Art Jakarta Tom Tandio said the venue has helped them to display more artworks, including massive ones. They also feature 70 galleries comprising 40 international galleries and 30 local galleries.
“The galleries are excited,” Tom said on Friday. “Last year, our space was limited, but now our space is comfortable. They [the galleries] really appreciate it and they told me they want to join the next Art Jakarta.”
Tom also cited the fair’s collaboration with other parties from Indonesia and abroad that at the same time also reinforces the Indonesian and Southeast Asian art scenes.

A number of activities and programs can be enjoyed in the event, namely Art Jakarta Spot, Charity, Scene, Talk and Play.
Art Jakarta Spot, for instance, enables visitors to marvel at seven large artworks in certain spots. Curated by the fair’s Board of Young Collectors, some of the artworks are Solar Worship by Albert Yonathan, Happy to be Alienated by Eko Nugroho and Dark Waves by teamLab to name a few.
Visitors are also able to gain more knowledge about particular parts of the art scene through Art Jakarta Talk. Among the programs are discussion Public or Private - The Role of Museums in Asia that will be held on Saturday at 2.30 p.m., a discussion about the Indonesia Pavilion in Venice Biennale Arte 2019 on Sunday at 4 p.m. and debate dubbed Being Global – Collectors Musical Chair Debate on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The fair also provides workshops for children as part of a collaboration with Eko Nugroho Art Class, such as rock painting classes on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. and making woven bags on Sunday at 7 p.m. (asw)
